JOIN US at an upcoming Symphonic Encounters

We wanted to reach out and let you know more about our upcoming Symphonic Encounters.

The VSO’s open rehearsal program, Symphonic Encounters, takes students, teachers, and community groups behind the scenes to discover what it takes for the musicians, conductors, and production team of the Vancouver Symphony to prepare for a world class concert. Our first Symphonic Encounters event promises to be a powerfully moving experience!

Hilary Hahn Plays
Sibelius

Friday January 13 | 10am - 12:30

Three-time Grammy Award-winner Hilary Hahn returns at last to the VSO to share her soulful interpretation of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Plus, a thrilling orchestral workout by Richard Strauss, and Canadian composer Ana Sokolovic's charming Nine Proverbs.
Beethoven, Berlioz, Bartok & Brueggergosman

Thursday February 16 | 10am – 12:30pm

Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 mix operatic conventions with heroic Beethovenian energy. By contrast, Berlioz’s La mort de Cléopâtre is a stark cantata, performed here by the great Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman. The concert closes with Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, one of his most popular works.

Philharmonia Fantastique
Philharmonia Fantastique: The Making of the Orchestra is a concerto for orchestra and animated film that flies through the instruments of the orchestra to explore the age-old connection of creativity and technology. Guided by a magical Sprite, we see violin strings vibrate, brass valves slice air, and drum heads resonate. The film, created by the team behind such Disney classics as The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Inside Out, takes students on a magical up-close journey showing how musical sounds are created.

Music Care Conference
We are partnering with Music Care at the upcoming conference in New Westminster on November 5th, at the Anvil Centre.

The Music Care Conference 2022 focuses on how music helps provide a pathway to both physical and mental wellness. Highlights include a brief performance by VSO musicians Julia Lockhart and Olivia Blander followed by a talk on the community impact of their work on Performance Anxiety and Wellbeing.
